JULY 2024 INDUSTRY 05 Effective EU policy 2024-2029 Ensuring fair competition during this delicate period should be a focus of EU pol- icy. Interest in an equitable evolution should come from the simple fact that the after- market is key to keeping Europe’s 300 mil- lion vehicles on the road and that it current- ly employs more than 4.5 million skilled workers.3 While individual workshops can do little to shape policy, collectively their concerns can be heard. Already organisations like the European Association of Automotive Suppliers and the International Federation of Automotive Aftermarket Distributors are campaigning to ensure a competitive European aftermarket. Suggestions for greater and equitable access to all vehicle interfaces and data as outlined in the EU’s ‘Access to vehicle data, functions and resources’ initiative is an important first step. Another important pol- icy is an extension of the Motor Vehicle Exemption Regulation beyond 2028. There are many areas in which the EU can develop policy that ensures the aftermarket remains competitive to consumers’ best interests. Workshops: Invest and upskill Policy discussions in Brussels are only part of the solution. The reality is that many workshops may not have experienced much of a shift. After all, the car parc is ageing, with the average vehicle in Western Europe reaching 11 years old and those in Central and Eastern Europe being even older. This means that ‘conventional’ day-to-day oper- ations on combustion vehicles are still the majority of aftermarket work. There is a risk that this will lull the inde- pendent aftermarket into a false sense of KEY FACTS There has been a brief lapse of EV sales in Europe, yet EV sales are expected to accelerate from 2025 through to 2035. So rather than a cause for concern, this brief lapse in momentum should be seen as something of a blessing for the aftermarket, allowing more time to prepare for the imminent transi- tion. As EV adoption accelerates from 2025, workshops must invest in upskilling and adapting to new technologies, and the EU needs to ensure the aftermarket remains fair and competitive during this delicate period. security. Familiar systems and familiar brands will certainly be the backbone of aftermarket work over the coming decade, but it will shift radically as we approach 2035. For both workshops and technicians, up-to-date familiarity with battery electric and hybrid powertrains will be essential, as will knowledge of the sensors and systems that enable autonomous vehicle functions. This brief slowdown in EV sales offers the aftermarket a vital opportunity to prepare for the imminent transition. As EV adoption accelerates from 2025, workshops must invest in upskilling and adapting to new technologies. During this period, effective EU policies that ensure fair access to vehi- cle data and components will be crucial in supporting independent repairers. By pre- paring for these changes now, the aftermar- ket can remain competitive and continue servicing Europe’s growing vehicle fleet. For the coming decade, however, change is coming from several fronts. Techno- logically, workshops will face increasing electrification and connectivity. This brings with it questions about the control of data and the services it will enable – such as pre- dictive maintenance. Given the current sta- tus quo, this is likely to benefit OEMs and authorised repairers far more than the independent aftermarket. This is a trend that is strengthening, with many manufacturers identifying the oppor- tunity to integrate the value chain, leverag- ing increasing vehicle complexity to gain market share in aftermarket services. This is amidst the backdrop of widespread con- solidation within the aftermarket and the push for more private label parts, which are expected to reach 20-30% of the market by 2025 – approaching the USA’s private label share of 40-50%2. The coming decade will be something of a showdown between the independent after- market and authorised repairers. It is esti- mated that, over the next five years, OEM- backed aftermarket will grow at an annual rate of 3.5% (compared to just 1% for the independent aftermarket) and capture 40% of the market.

Google’s integration of its Android operating system, particularly through the Android Automotive Operat- ing System (AAOS), marks its entry into the automotive realm. The “Google Built- in” platform further integrates AAOS and Google services (such as “Maps”) into vehicles. Apple’s CarPlay 2.0 comple- ments these efforts, by seamlessly inte- grating with infotainment systems and mirroring the iPhone experience. These initiatives, which aim to transplant the app-centric model from smartphones to cars, have the potential to become game-changers in the vehicle industry, empowering third-party developers to create services utilising vehicle sensor data. But what is the status of these Big Tech initiatives? 1. Google Built-in Built-in partners in 2024 are Polestar, Volvo, Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Renault, Honda, Acura, Nissan, Lincoln (see URL). The newest OS version Android 14 was released on 4 October 2023 (see URL) – it includes additional vehicle signals, which are new non-ADAS signals (such as win- dows, mirrors and door properties or EV properties for Braking, Acceleration and Battery) and ADAS signals (such as AEB - Automatic emergency braking or LKA - Lane keep assist). Only a subset of vehicle signals is available without permissions or by asking the driver for permission. Other signals need the accessing app to be approved by OEMs. 2. Apple CarPlay 2.0 Apple has advanced in providing car services via iPhone with Apple CarPlay 2.0 as well. Apple presented the first partici- pating OEMs in December 2023. Aston Martin & Porsche are confirmed partners and will provide CarPlay 2.0 in their vehicles. Originally, Apple CarPlay focused on the infotainment system and mirrored the iPhone content. However, today’s cars have several, significantly larger screens. This results in endless possibilities for improving the (driving)experience (by) using new apps and widgets. New CarPlay 2.0 details were presented at the WWDC venue in June 2024. The new custom grid on your screens will be fully customisable without any Apple branding, which means even an instrument cluster can be designed the way you want it in the colours you like. In addition to that, the compatibility has changed a lot and new exciting apps to control individual car model features such as air conditioning, radio and seats can be expected. various brands. Virtual Vehicle eases entry for future services with an AAOS-equipped car. 3. How to tap into this New Era? To stay ahead in developing future in-vehicle digital services for AAOS and CarPlay, a development and testing infra- structure is crucial but still hardly exists. As an applied research centre and digital innovation hub, Virtual Vehicle Research has realised a comprehensive evaluation environment for partners, utilising a real vehicle retrofitted with AAOS and corre- sponding technical, service-related build- ing blocks. It is already in use in a K2 Digital Mobility research project with Bosch and CARUSO dataplace. This real-world laboratory lowers the entry barrier for new service concepts, hands-on development and thorough test- ing, minimising risks at an early stage. Such an approach ensures that a future digital service product meets market needs and expectations, accelerating the innova- tion process. Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH has re- ceived funding within COMET Competence Centers for Excellent Technologies from BMK, BMAW, the Province of Styria (Dept. 12) and the Styrian Business Promotion Agency (SFG). The Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) has been authorised for the programme management. 

JULY 2024 INSIDE ATR 09 1. Mr. Hilbert how does the term ‘Mobility’ in your official position reflect Bosch’s global strategy? The Mobility Aftermarket division is part of Bosch Mobility, which has, as of 1 January 2024, realigned its organisation to respond better and with greater agility to changing customer and market requirements. Decarbonisation, electrification, digital con- nectivity and a shift to sustainable fuels to power transport are changing the meaning of mobility. For a low-emissions future, we are optimising the use of traditional energy sources by driving forward electrification not only in mobility, but also in commercial buildings and homes. And we are tapping into new, sustainable energy sources – with hydrogen playing a central role. As far as the Mobility Aftermarket division is con- cerned, we consider ourselves to be the driving force and hub in the mobility after- market ecosystem, providing parts, diag- nostics and workshop services for mainte- nance and repair of vehicles over their lifetime. 2. Supply Chain, Production, Logistics, Marketing and Customer Support: where are the biggest challenges in the region? Looking at our region and, in some cases, its existing infrastructure, it should come as no surprise that logistics remains a chal- lenge. Another aspect is the lack of quali- fied workforce in the automotive sector, something that can heavily impact the entire distribution chain in our region. Even more so, as the independent aftermarket sector in our region is increasingly demand- ing a “Right to repair”, requesting access to vehicle generated data in order to conduct service, maintenance and repair jobs. This right has to be combined with an obligation of independent workshops to have fully trained technicians and state of the art diagnostics equipment so these activities can be properly performed. 3. What are the goals and expecta- tions of changing from an exclusive distributor to a multi-distributor model in Latin America? Latin America is a strategic region with a huge potential. We have a very mature presence and strong market shares in Brazil and Argentina via our own legal entities. But we also explore the existing potential in other countries following a very clear strat- egy of sustainable growth in the aftermar- ket. We appreciate very much the long-term partnerships we had and continue to have with our distribution partners and over the last years we have strengthened our pres- ence by incorporating our aftermarket activities into existing local legal Bosch entities in Panama, as a hub for Central America and the Caribbean, in Colombia and very recently in Chile and Peru. Direct access to selected markets is improving our market intelligence and speed, which in turn is essential for us to improve our broad portfolio of parts, diagnostics and work- shop services towards our partners on all levels of the distribution chain in those countries. Further solutions to fos- ter the digitalisation of the sector include electronic cataloguing and the usage of analytics for better identification of cus- tomer needs. For our workshop concept partners we provide solutions that can fur- ther help to digitise and increase the effi- ciency of their businesses. 5. Implementing Bosch Car Service presents a challenge in Latin America. What are your plans for the services concept in the region? I notice a significant difference between Latin America and Europe when it comes to independent workshops joining a workshop concept. Given all the technological chang- es, the digital transformation and the speed in which they advance and change our sec- tor, I would expect independent workshops in Latin America to be increasingly looking for a strong partner for support, as this can help safeguard their future. Our ambition is to almost double our BCS network by 2030. The recently increased direct presence in countries such as Colombia, Chile and Peru adoption of electromobility in Latin America and how will Bosch lead this change? We will continue to improve and develop different technologies for the region, and that includes efficient internal combustion, with a special focus on bio-fuels such as ethanol, but also hybrid and full electric vehicles. When it comes to parts distribu- tion, electrification still has a limited impact on most of the countries in our region, except for very few. However, it is mandato- ry that the independent workshops step up their preparations in order to be able to per- form at least basic service, maintenance and repair jobs on electric or hybrid vehicles. 7. How has Bosch adapted its remote work and project man- agement policy in Latin America? In Latin America we have policies in place, which regulate flexibility at work in accor- dance with the needs of our business asso- ciates, while at the same time considering legal aspects, cost savings and change management. Working from home and working from anywhere are both being con- sidered. We communicate and constantly encourage all areas including the leader- ship teams in Latin America to use the pos- sibilities offered by Smart Work and find the best way to collaborate in a hybrid format with their teams. We are convinced that this approach is important in making us more attractive, more competitive while at the same time delivering excellent business results.

The entire one-day fair, with rich content, was dynamic from opening to closing. It was very dynamic at the stands of the Tokić Educational Center (TEC) and Auto Check Center service net- work. Besides the wide exhibitor lineup, visitors had the opportunity to enjoy about ten exciting entertainment platforms and a special schedule of training for certain suppliers. “This regional fair is a showcase of what we live through the whole year, with large number of sales representatives and a network of 130 branches in Croatia and Slovenia. New technologies and trends wait for no one, but require solid and stable partners who will bring the transition to the end user. We need to inte- grate technology into society with education and added Tokić attaches great importance to efficient warehouse management and even uses autonomous robots value. JULY 2024 INSIDE ATR INSIDE ATR 17 Diversity work involves employees and attracts young people KGK is committed to a diverse working culture in which employees can learn from each other efforts to encourage more people to choose vocational training and to support gender equality work in the industry. The report also suggests that politicians need to work more on changing attitudes in society. “The challenges of attracting minorities to create diversity are significant and exist both internally within the company and external- ly in the motor industry. Add to that the general difficulty in recruiting employees to our industry,” says Ann-Helen. KGK attracts young people to a quality-assured automotive industry To increase diversity and encourage more people to choose vocational training in the automotive industry, KGK partici- pates in the digital catalogue “Framtids- valet,” which has inspired ninth-grade stu- dents for their high school choices since the 90s. In the catalogue, KGK presents the opportunities available in the automotive industry and highlights that a profession as an automotive mechanic is developmental and filled with stimulating problem-solving, not just in the workshop. The education also opens up opportunities to work as, for example, an administrator, IT technician, or salesperson in the industry. To further attract younger talents to the industry, KGK collaborates with the Motor Industry College (MBC) and other companies to ensure quality and set the standard for high Please continue reading on the next page KEY FACTS In 2023, all managers within the KGK group in Sweden underwent work- place training that focused on safeguarding the work environment, preventing illness, and accidents. After the training, the role of managers has been to implement the knowledge and experiences in their operations. KGK’s diversity work aims to create a work environment where people of different ages, backgrounds, and experiences, perspectives, or characteris- tics feel included, respected, and have the same rights and opportunities as their col- leagues. Diversity work also aims to attract more young people to the company. At KGK, the main responsibility for this important diversity work lies with the HR department. “The goal is for everyone at KGK to be part of and benefit from the diversity work we are conducting,” says Ann-Helen, who works as HR Manager at KGK. For example, recruitment advertise- ments are designed to attract more women to the industry. Currently, just over 26 per- cent of women work at the company. A good work environment and security create long-term employees In 2023, all managers within the KGK group in Sweden underwent workplace training that focused on safeguarding the work environment, preventing illness, and accidents. After the training, the role of managers has been to implement the knowledge and experiences in their opera- tions. One of the managers who underwent the training is Patrik Enberg, Warehouse Manager at KGK’s logistics centre in Enköping. He explains how the training has provided him with excellent knowledge and inspiration to continue working for a good work environment. “We are clear that we have zero tolerance for bullying. Not every- one can love everyone, but we should respect each other. We create a culture where everyone is welcome. For example, we collaborate with Samhall, which comes every day and labels goods or assembles various sets. The mix of people creates a more humble workplace, we do a better job, develop, and improve,” says Patrik. At KGK, many people enjoy working and have been there for a long time. “In our employee surveys, we annually assess the work environment at the company, where one of the questions concerns discrimina- tory treatment and bullying,” says Ann-Helen. Measures to increase diversity The industry and interest organisation Transportföretagen have examined diversi- ty in the motor industry. Their report shows that the proportion of newly recruited female managers in the motor industry in 2023 was only nine percent, reflecting the significant challenges faced by the indus- try. The report suggests measures such as

If the timing belt runs in oil, friction is reduced, allowing the engine to run more efficiently and smoothly. In the event of repairs, workshops should always use spare parts of original quality to ensure the best performance of the brake system. ZF Aftermarket is therefore supplementing its range of TRW-brand brake components with master cylinders and wheel brake cylinders as well as brake calipers for electric vehicles. The programme is completed by brake hoses. The brake is the most important safety system in a car. This means that garages should never compromise on parts quality when repairing the brake system. Especially in electric cars, because their brake system has been designed by the manufacturer for the special operating conditions in EVs. The hydraulic brake sys- tem must be particularly sensitive so that the driver does not feel the transition between electric (recuperation) and hydraulic braking. And it must be able to cope with prolonged periods of non-use, as only electric braking is used during moderate deceleration. For the Indepen- dent Aftermarket, ZF Aftermarket supplies a wide range of hydraulic components in original quality under its TRW brand, which can be used to repair many current electric cars. New on the market, for example, is the brake master cylinder for models based on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Toolkit (MEB) (VW ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, Audi Q4 e-tron and e-tron Sportback, Skoda Enyaq and Cupra Born). The brake master cylin- der works perfectly with the electronic brake booster from TRW (EBB, Electronic Brake Booster). A further addition to the TRW pro- gramme is wheel brake cylinders, which the company provides for numerous models with drum brakes. The latest additions for electric vehicles are for models such as the Opel Rocks-E, the Renault Zoe and Twingo III, the Skoda E-Citigo, the VW E-Up, the Peugeot 208 II as well as the Smart Fourtwo and Forfour. In total, the TRW brand covers almost the entire European vehicle fleet with over 600-part numbers. TRW wheel brake cylinders are available in both cast iron and aluminium versions and A wide range of brake products for electric vehicles is available under the TRW brand - from brake discs to pads. are manufactured according to OE specifications. The TRW programme of hydraulic parts for the brake system is rounded off by an extensive portfolio of brake calipers. New additions include those for electric cars such as the Audi e-tron, BMW i3 and iX3 as well as numerous models from the Stellantis Group, including the vans and high-roof estate cars from Citroën and Peugeot, the Opel Corsa E and Peugeot E-2008 small cars and the Citroën ë-C4. There are also electrically powered models from Ford, Fiat and Iveco. ZF Aftermarket recommends that garages always replace the brake hoses when replacing brake calipers. In the expe- rience of the ZF experts, these important components are often not given the same attention as the wearing parts brake pads and discs. However, new brake hoses ensure the volume flow of brake fluid spec- ified by the car manufacturer, guarantee the ideal brake pressure, prevent the newly installed spare parts from becoming con- taminated with deposits from the old hoses and bring the brake system into a uniform and optimum condition. TRW brake hoses are available for practically all vehicles on the European market, which, together with its range of brake pads, shoes, discs and brake fluid, makes the brand a complete supplier for the brake system. JULY 2024 TRENDS 43 duction lead times. The cumulative delays of orders, production and delivery that currently take weeks or even months could be reduced to mere hours. As the past few years have shown, even the most robust supply chains can suffer during a global crisis. While the ability to print parts relies on having suitable material, it certainly simplifies the supply chain. There are also benefits for design alterations and recalls. As parts for a new vehicle are shown to be faulty or fail to meet performance requirements, it would be possible to send workshops a new part file. This file could then be printed and fit- ted to the customer’s car, making the recall or improvement process far quicker. Equally, aftermarket suppliers would be able to do the same, improving designs and sending them to workshops instantly once validated in testing. There may also be sustainability bene- fits of this new approach, with far less transportation required to produce a part. Without the extensive logistics required, the lifecycle emissions of a part would likely be reduced. It may also make recy- cling simpler, depending on the material, with the potential to recycle old, printed parts into entirely differ- ent ones. Challenges of adoption The promise of the technology is equally matched by the challeng- es facing its adoption in the aftermarket. First and foremost, it is not currently a common technology within the supply chain at the man- ufacturer, distributor, or garage level. This means that the barrier to entry is quite high, requiring investment in hardware and complementary training. There is also the matter of quality con- trol and intellectual property protection. The design of parts relies upon exact knowledge of the material and process via which it will be made. Once this is no longer within the control of the designer, there is no guarantee of quality or func- tion. Equally, 3D printing has made it eas- ier to reverse engineer and manufacture 3D prototype created by 3d printing. Multi Jet Fusion (MJF). parts, which makes it far simpler to steal or replicate intellectual property. At the current cost of entry, the diffi- culty of adoption also depends greatly on the application. For example, workshops that frequently work with historic cars suffer from a dwindling supply of spare parts. These workshops would benefit enormously from the ability to design and reproduce parts on-site at a few days’ notice – it would also be economically via- ble, given their passionate clientele. For most garages, however, perhaps the most likely integration of 3D printing is via local or regional manufacturers that make on-demand parts using files from the OEM or aftermarket supplier. This could be invaluable in more remote regions or during periods where logistics are severely constrained. Preparing for the future The potential of 3D printing in the automotive aftermarket is clear; whether it becomes a mainstream application is another question. At the current cost-of- entry, mass adoption in the aftermarket is unlikely. However, there are absolutely niche applications – such as classic car maintenance and high-performance mod- ifications – where it can work alongside more traditional subtractive technologies like machining. Nevertheless, it is exciting to consider that there may come a day when cars arrive in the shop, the problem is diagnosed, the part is 3D printed in-house, and then fitted that same day.
